Real Music. Real Smooth.
Love Soul. Love Smooth.
These are possible slogans that were believed to be the most apposite for the Soul magazine. The aim of the slogan is to be very simple and effortless, making it appear very mature which would help catch the eyes of an older audience; and therefore be very catchy, stick in a person’s head easily, attractive and also fitting to the name of the magazine which was decided to be ‘Smooth’.
The full stops being used are meant to slow down the rhythm and pace of how the slogan is supposed to be read and spoken. The slow rhythm fits in with the vibe of the magazine, and connotes the name of the magazine as it allows a smooth, flowing speech that is easily spoken.
Real Music. Real Smooth. – This slogan I believed fitted incredibly well for the magazine, as the repetition of the word “Real” not only sounded attractive but also places great importance upon the word as well. Real conveys that Soul music is the best kind of music out there as it is the only one classified as real, and would also suggest and place emphasis on the fact that this magazine to all about music. By the term “Real Smooth” this is used in multiple ways and somewhat as a pun, as it possesses multiple meanings to the word ‘Smooth’ being defined as the name of the magazine, and it’s actual correct terminology also. It suggests that the magazine actually in itself defines what the word smooth is and what it actually means, however it could also be seen as pure emphasis on the fact that the Soul magazine and genre is meant to be smooth, and so the magazine never forgets that trait and is proud of how strongly this characteristic can be cast.
Love Soul. Love Smooth. – This slogan also fitted extraordinarily well for the magazine, also placing repetition of a word. This time that word is ‘Love’, and I believe that this word in a way is more powerful than the word ‘Real’ as love is actually real, and it shows true emotions and passions for something, so it entices people who are true fans of the Soul genre to buy the magazine. It also enforces a need for customers to buy the magazine as it is basically telling you that if you love soul music, then you will love ‘Smooth’ magazine. Another praise to this is that it simply complements the magazine, whereas with the first slogan it does this however could actually be offensive and degrading to other magazines, as it could be seen that the puff is saying that only Soul music is real, therefore every other genre of music must not be. There is also matching alliteration at use here, as with the ‘L’ from the word “Love”, and the ‘S’ from the words “Soul” and “Smooth”; and they both happen to be in an order and structure of L, S, L, S. This is very effective as it makes it sound very appealing and shows that although it seems simple, extra thought has been put into making the slogan as successful as possible, which many readers may appreciate.
Winner = Love Soul. Love Smooth.
For the reasons mentioned above, this slogan has been awarded the winner and thus the official one to the magazine. Although ‘Real Music. Real Smooth.’ was found to be very good and fitting to the magazine, we believe that ‘Love Soul. Love Smooth.’ was overall the better slogan for the various explanations noted, and also due to the fact that this slogan holds both the name of the magazine and the genre of the magazine, whereas the other slogan only holds the name. Overall we believed this slogan happened to be the most catchy and we felt that the readers of the magazine would be able to find this more attractive and memorable, even if to just a small extent, due to the various devices at hand here.
