This was the first attempt at a masthead. I was taken as a development from one of two of the typographies that I had considered my favourite.
The font is big and bold which is good as this can allow it to stand out much more clearly and be very noticeable, which is key to making a successful logo and masthead. The effect of a fade of purple being present here I feel is good as it shows connotations of wealth, warmth and sophistication also due to being a dark colour, which is an effect I want to display through the masthead due to target audience that it is intended for, so it needs to be mature. The colour of the title being white was also commendable, as white can easily stick out in such a dark background, and is a safe colouring that can go with anything without awkward and odd contrasts.
However, although I believe it is a good design for a masthead, I still do not believe this is the most eye-catching, appealing and appropriate one that can be used for the magazine. I didn’t feel that the effect of all the letters being upper case didn’t quite convey the meaning of the title itself, being ‘Smooth’. I believed that it needed to be softer and seem more relaxed, so I will instead try using only the first letter in capitals, and the rest of the letters appearing lower case. I also thought that it might be best to change the background colour from black/ purple as though purple can relate to a similar theme that I want to express through the magazine, it doesn’t quite manage to truly be representative to the soul magazine, and I believed a warmer colour would be a more appropriate and suitable fit. This also applies for the white colouring of the font, as although it goes well, I wanted to have a warmer colour at hand that can essentially portray warmth and sensuality that are vibes, which depict the Soul genre.
